Atomic Bomberman

Atomic Bomberman is the first original Bomberman game made for Windows, developed and published by Interplay Productions under licence from Hudson Soft. Up to ten players drop bombs across maze-like arenas in classic or enhanced mode, on a single PC or over a local network. The game swaps hand-drawn sprites for pre-rendered 3D characters and backgrounds, and is known for its constant stream of voice clips by Charlie Adler and Billy West. A hidden level editor lets you build your own arenas and choose which power-ups appear.

Verify your download in PowerShell: Get-FileHash .\Bomberman-Patch-v1.0.zip The hash must match exactly. If it does not, do not run the file.

Works on Windows 10 and Windows 11 (64-bit).

What this patch fixes

The patch is a replacement ddraw.dll: a small DirectDraw implementation made for this game. The game still believes it has an exclusive 640x480 256-colour screen, but nothing changes your display:

  • The game starts and runs on Windows 10/11
  • Borderless fullscreen at your desktop resolution, 4:3 with black bars, smooth GPU (OpenGL) scaling; no resolution switch, instant Alt+Tab
  • Steady 60 fps with vsync
  • CPU use down from a full core to about a fifth of one
  • The installer fixes CFG.INI so the game finds its data in its own folder (the old file is kept as CFG.INI.orig)

No game files are included. BM.EXE is not changed.

Installation

  1. Extract this folder into the game folder (next to BM.EXE), or anywhere else: the installer will then ask for the game folder.
  2. Close the game and double-click Install.bat.
  3. Start the game with BM.EXE (BM95.EXE does not work on 64-bit Windows).
  4. If you set compatibility options for BM.EXE earlier (Windows 95, 256 colours, ...), turn them off again.
